Wolves North American Academy
In December 2014, Queen City United Soccer Club signed on as an official Partner Club with Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. of the English League Championship. Queen City United Soccer Club was one of the first clubs in Canada to be approved for this partnership. We look forward to a very bright future for our players with this exciting partnership!
The Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. (Also known as Wolves or Wolves FC) are currently one of only 19 clubs in the UK to attain Category 1 status (the highest Academy accreditation status in the England and one that many of the current EPL teams don't have). Their academy has developed world-class players such as Robbie Keane (over 130 career appearances with Republic of Ireland, and more than 280 career professional goals with teams in the EPL, Serie A, and currently with LA Galaxy in the MLS) and Joleon Lescott (England international, and 10 seasons in the EPL, currently with West Brom). They have also produced several other professionals like goalkeepers Matt Murray (played 12 years with Wolverhampton), and Wayne Hennessey (currently with Crystal Palace in the EPL) and field players like Elliot Bennett (currently with Norwich City in EPL), Lee Naylor (appeared in 2006-07 UEFA Champions League and several seasons in the EPL), Jamie Smith (10+ year professional, currently with Colorado Rapids in the MLS), Carl Robinson (15 year professional playing career, currently Head Coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps) and many, many more.
Wolverhampton isn't just looking at what they've done in the past; they are working on what they are going to do in the future as well. Their current youth academy team is active in the 2014-15 FA Youth Cup. They recently defeated Rotherham United to move on to the Fourth Round, where they will meet the Tottenham Hotspur youth team late January 2015. In November 2014 Wolves officially opened their brand new £7 million ($12.7 million CAD) state of the art training facility and arena in Wolverhampton as well.
The Wolves North American Academy partnership program has been established to develop youth programs in North America that share Wolverhampton's coaching methodology and provides opportunities for young soccer players in Canada and the USA to fully realize their potential. This is achieved by following the "Wolves Way" player development model and providing our players with training experiences similar to young players in England. This training includes technical, tactical, coordination, speed and physiological training preparation.
Academy staff coaches from Wolverhampton travel to Regina on an annual basis to evaluate and provide feedback to our players on their progress towards a possible career in professional soccer as well as coming to town for other camps and educational sessions. During this time Wolves staff will also work with our clubs coaching staff to help maintain quality instruction and a consistent message between visits. Each year Wolves hold identification camps with official Partner Clubs throughout North America where the top players get the opportunity to attend the Elite Player Tour where they will train at the Wolves Academy in Wolverhampton, England.
